The International Photography Awards is a sister-effort of the Lucie Foundation, where the top three winners are announced at the annual Lucie Awards ceremony. The awards event will be held at the Lincoln Center in New York on October 24, 2011, before returning to Los Angeles in 2012 in celebration of the 10-year anniversary. Over 8,000 submissions from 90 countries were received for the 2011 International Photography Awards with over 70 jurors, the largest to date. The Foundation’s mission is to honor master photographers, discover new and emerging talent, and promote the appreciation of photography. IPA is dedicated to recognizing contemporary photographers’ accomplishments in this specialized and highly visible competition. Visit www.photoawards.com for more details.
CRITICAL MASS 2011 FINALIST

I’m very pleased to announce that the SEA/LIFE series has been moved forward into the final round of judging for this year’s Critical Mass award, part of the always wonderful Photolucida world.
“Critical Mass is a program about exposure and community. The idea is simple—photographers (from anywhere) submit a 10 image portfolio. This work is then pre-screened by a committee of approximately 20 great jurors. From those votes, the 200 top Finalists are determined. These 200 Finalists and their work go on to a jury of approximately 200 of the world’s best curators, editors, and other professionals who have agreed to view and vote on the Finalists’ work. Using these votes, at least one photographer is chosen to receive a book award and once the monograph is published, everyone who enters and juries will receive a copy of the book(s).”

NEW WORK – PROGRESS RESTS
AUTHOR MICHAEL V. SMITH

The always wonderful Michael V. Smith has his second novel “Progress” out in Spring 2011 with Cormorant Books in Toronto. Smith’s first novel, Cumberland (Cormorant Books, 2002), was nominated for the Amazon/Books in Canada First Novel Award. His first book of poetry, What You Can’t Have (Signature Editions, 2006), was short-listed for the ReLit Prize. Most recently, he’s published a hybrid book of concrete poems/photographs, Body of Text (BookThug, 2008), created with yours truly.

BLACK + WHITE MAGAZINE
The Hibernus exhibition in Woodstock, NY received a sidebar mention in Black + White magazine’s “American Connection – Exhibitions in the USA” by Susan Burnstine. This is in the Xmas issue.
The main article about Debbie Fleming Caffery was spot on…a stellar career and a very interesting read. The article’s author Susan Burnstine is a successful fine art photographer whose work I greatly admire. I had the pleasure of meeting Susan in Portland in April, 2009.

“HIBERNUS” EXHIBITION AT GALERIE BMG IN WOODSTOCK, NY

Galerie BMG is pleased to host the exhibition of “Hibernus…a winter study” by Canadian photographer, David Ellingsen
12 Tannery Brook Rd, Woodstock, New York, 12498
845/679-0027
December 4th to January 11
The second solo exhibition this year for my series “Hibernus” begins today at Galerie BMG in Woodstock, NY. I am sad to say I cannot make it in person as I just arrived back from China yesterday, but the owners Bernard and Judi Gerson will of course be there for this evening’s reception to welcome guests on my behalf.
Here’s some early local press from Chronogram Magazine.
Additionally, there is an exhibition notice in the beautiful Photograph Magazine.
From my dealings with them, I must comment on the attention to detail of their production crew. Not often now that you have to send an actual print, which they scan and colour match.
First class all the way.
